Olympic Triathlon Training Update 8: Half Taper Week and Free Time!

This week was lovely lots of little jobs off the list, less working out to do, no daunting workouts in the schedule, great weather and even fun social stuff. We went to an RC air show, that was cold, but fun, family time and fun time. Also sleeping in time, quitting early time so you can see it’s been a great week but after this weekend’s race it’s back to another big project but it couldn’t be closer to home!

Thursday: 5k Run: I went after work and opted for my regular route which has been closed off and on for two weeks for beach repairs even though it’s a bit longer. It was very hot and muggy but a good run all in all nothing exciting happened until the end when I was setting up for my photoshoot. A couple of little girls (like 6) came up to me to tell me how much they liked my outfit, my pink shoes and my skirt. They asked about my pink camouflage KT tape and thought that was pretty too. Now honey often says I dress like I’m 7 but I’m actually well dressed by a seven year old’s standards thank you very much!

The fact that I’m standing so you can’t see the tape is an accident I swear!

Friday: 500 m swim (paddle boarding instead): It’s not that I didn’t want to go swimming it was that I wanted to go paddle boarding more! I heroically (or stubbornly) insisted on carrying the 47 lb board down the driveway rather than driving it down and my plan was to finally paddle for groceries which is totally silly but still on my bucket list. But it was really windy and there were even white caps but I’d already told all the neighbours that I was doing it at an impromptu conference about tractors that afternoon my plan so I was committed. Do you ever heroically (or stubbornly) commit to an idea and the universe has to save you from yourself, that’s what happened to me. For the first time in at least 44 years the beach was closed to swimmers due to high bacteria. Now in this small town that will get the rumour mill churning a bad test, a false positive, lifeguard staffing issues, sharks and a dead whale off shore have all been put forward as possible conspiracies since this is the only thing that’s happened since January, it’s been a VERY busy year this year so far! Either way it was an out and I took it!

So I walked back up to the house and got my truck and honey’s GoPro and shot a yoga video and some live paddling footage. If you want to check them out here’s a link to my channel. Not terribly exciting footage but very calming maybe. PS I know there are only three videos there and I made them all this weekend.

Sunday: 1-2 hour bike ride (and paddle boarding): We’ve been searching for a good used, very small boat trailer and we headed back Mill Lake this week to check a few out. I saw how much the power line cut looked so I headed out to bike there and while it would normally be ride-able but challenging for me right now, pre-race. I’m all nervous about getting injured and so my nerve was not with me. I did manage to jam my chain into my front derailleur twice and so I mostly took my bike for a walk for an hour over obstacles and sometimes swearing at the bike. We had dinner at my mom’s and this time my sister said she wanted to try the paddle board but that turned out to be a lie, joking it was a bit hectic. So rather than go home I dropped honey off and he mowed the lawn while I took the board to our cove and shot a time lapse video of me doing it which you can check out on instagram. It was pretty cool in the end.

Monday: 5k run (and bikini yoga and work swimming): Every summer the coast guard comes into our bay near to my birthday. This week was the week so I took a photo with them in the background. Right after I was done they left so maybe it was for me… Anyway nothing to exciting happened but I did get up early to get it done. Also I’m trying to make myself stick to an earlier schedule this week ahead of race day. Turns out to be a good idea given how the day went. We got home early and it was stinking hot so I did the astanga primary series on the lawn in my bathing suit. At work I got to go swimming for little pieces of wood as honey cut the side of a wharf we were putting finishing touches on for another local wharf company. We found out today that owner calls us “the finishers” to his customers. I like it since it sounds dangerous like Brad and Angelina in Mr. and Mrs. Smith! It’s very similar because cordless power tools are basically weapons but it’s also just a little bit different.

If you’re interested in the plan I’m using it’s the realistic olympic triathlon training plan I wrote available here. While you’re there check out my other plans too including the new bare minimum 1/2 marathon training plan, more info here. What are you training for this season?
